Why it excels: Tests 5 distinct high-frequency letters (Vowels: A, E | Consonants: S, T, R) with strong slot alignment.
Best Wordle Starting Words
High-information starting words based on our dataset and scoring method.
Rather than relying on arbitrary opinions or copying competitor rankings, our rankings are derived directly from the 2,309 official Wordle solution words through an explainable, 5-factor mathematical model combining letter popularity, positional slot probability, vowel coverage balance, and candidate entropy reduction.
Balanced Strategy
Words like STARE and SLATE test 2 optimal vowels (A, E) and 3 powerhouse consonants (S, T, R/L), maximizing green tile probability on Turn 1.
Zero Duplicate Letters
Never guess duplicate letters on Turn 1. Testing 5 distinct letters explores 19.2% of the entire alphabet, maximizing candidate elimination.

Explainable Scoring Methodology
We do not rely on subjective opinions or black-box rankings. Every score is deterministically computed from the 2,309 official Wordle solution words using 5 weighted inputs totaling 100 maximum points.
1. Letter Frequency (Overall)
Measures how frequently each letter appears across all 2,309 official Wordle solution answers. Letters like E (appears in 1,230 answers), A (975), and R (897) contribute maximum value, while infrequent letters like J, Q, and Z contribute near zero.
S_freq = (LetterOccurrenceSum / MaxRaw) × 40 2. Positional Slot Frequency
Having the right letters is good; placing them where they most often turn green is even better. For instance, S appears in slot 1 in 365 words (15.8% of all answers), while E lands in slot 5 in 422 words (18.3%). STARE and SLATE gain immense points here.
S_pos = (PositionalOccurrenceSum / MaxRawPos) × 25 3. Unique Letter Coverage
Tests whether the word wastes letter slots on duplicate characters on Turn 1. A word with 5 unique letters receives the full 15 points. Words with 4 unique letters receive 8 points, and words with 3 or fewer receive heavy penalties.
5 unique = 15 pts | 4 unique = 8 pts | ≤3 = 2 pts 4. Vowel Coverage Balance
Empirical Wordle distributions show that 57.9% of answers have exactly 2 vowels, and 31.7% have 1 vowel. Words containing 2 vowels (e.g. A, E or O, E) receive the full 10 points. Words with 3 vowels get 8 points; 4 vowels drop to 2 points because they choke out high-frequency consonants.
2 Vowels = 10 pts | 3 Vowels = 8 pts | 4 Vowels = 2 pts 5. Information Gain & Candidate Entropy
Approximates information-theoretic entropy. Letters near 50% frequency (e.g. E at 53.3% and A at 42.2%) provide optimal binary partitioning of the candidate pool: regardless of whether they flash yellow/green or turn grey, they eliminate half of the remaining words.
S_info = (∑ 4 × p × (1 - p) / MaxRawInfo) × 10 Composite Formula
Composite Score = S_freq + S_pos + S_uniq + S_vowel + S_info Deep-Dive Analysis: The Top High-Information Openers

Two-Word Combo Strategy (The 10-Letter Blueprint)
For players who prefer consistency over guessing luck, playing two fixed, non-overlapping words across Turn 1 and Turn 2 tests 10 distinct high-frequency letters before attempting the final solve on Turn 3.
Covers S, T, A, R, E, C, H, I, N, O. Tests 4 common vowels (A, E, I, O) and 6 essential consonants with zero duplicated letters.
Covers S, L, A, T, E, C, R, O, N, Y. Tests the massive ending letter Y (#2 ending letter in Wordle at 15.8%) while maintaining peak positional coverage.
Covers C, R, A, N, E, T, O, I, L, S. Features 10 of the top 11 most popular letters in the entire Wordle solution corpus, almost guaranteeing 3–4 hits.
The Vowel Myth: Why ADIEU & AUDIO Aren't Optimal
Millions of daily Wordle players begin with ADIEU or AUDIO to locate vowels quickly. Here is why statistical models consistently rank them lower.
- Wastes 4 slots on vowels: Finding out that a word contains an E or A still leaves hundreds of matching words because almost every English word has them.
- Only tests 1 consonant: Words like ADIEU test only D. Consonants are what distinguish words like CRANE, BRAIN, TRAIN, and DRAIN.
- Weak positional value: ADIEU has almost zero probability of landing a green tile in slots 2, 3, or 4 based on Wordle solution frequencies.
- Optimal 2-vowel balance: Tests the two most frequent vowels (A and E), which occur in 975 and 1,230 Wordle answers respectively.
- Tests 3 powerhouse consonants: Identifies or eliminates S, T, and R/L, which dramatically slash candidate possibilities down to small subsets.
- Peak green slot alignment: S in slot 1 is #1 (15.8%), E in slot 5 is #1 (18.3%), and A in slot 3 is #1 (13.3%).

Everything you need to know about finding words and solving puzzles.
Is there a single universally optimal Wordle starting word?
No single word is universally superior for every situation. While mathematical models rank words like STARE, SLATE, SANER, and CRANE highest for maximizing letter frequency, slot positioning, and entropy reduction, player strategy also depends on playstyle (e.g. vowel-hunting vs. consonant filtering) and whether playing in standard or Hard Mode. We classify these as high-information starting words based on our dataset and scoring method.
Why are words with duplicate letters (like SPEED or PUPPY) suboptimal on Turn 1?
Guessing duplicate letters on your opening turn wastes valuable testing bandwidth. A word with 5 distinct letters tests 5 separate symbols from the 26-letter alphabet (19.2% of all letters). A word with double letters tests only 4 (or 3) unique characters, drastically lowering your expected information gain and candidate reduction on Turn 1.
Is ADIEU or AUDIO actually the best Wordle opener?
While ADIEU and AUDIO are immensely popular among casual players because they test 4 vowels immediately, algorithmic analyses consistently show they underperform balanced words like STARE or SLATE. In English, consonants (like R, S, T, L, N, C) do the heavy lifting when it comes to ruling out candidate words. Learning that an E or A is present leaves hundreds of possible words, whereas identifying a consonant in the correct position narrows the candidate pool much faster.
Should you always open with an official Wordle solution candidate?
Yes, whenever possible. Words like STARE, SLATE, CRANE, and RAISE are part of the official 2,309 Wordle solution list. That gives you an immediate 1-in-2,309 (~0.043%) chance of hitting a hole-in-one on Turn 1. While some words not in the solution list (like SOARE or ROATE) are valid guesses and score well mathematically, they can never be the winning answer.
Why does your methodology score STARE and SLATE so highly?
STARE and SLATE achieve near-perfect composite scores because they combine the #1 starting consonant (S at 15.8%), the #1 ending vowel (E at 18.3%), the #1 second-slot vowel (A at 13.2%), and high-frequency liquids/stops (T, R, L) with 5 distinct letters and optimal 2-vowel balance.
What is a two-word combo opening strategy?
A two-word strategy involves playing two predetermined words across Turn 1 and Turn 2 that share zero letters, testing 10 distinct high-frequency letters before attempting to solve. For example, pairing STARE (S, T, A, R, E) with CHINO (C, H, I, N, O) tests all 5 common vowels and 5 top consonants with zero wasted tiles.
