How Scrabble Scores Are Calculated & How the Finder Works
Understanding tile values, board multipliers, and search mechanics
1. Base Tile Calculation
Every word's base score is the exact sum of its letter tile values. For example, the word QUIZ scores Q(10) + U(1) + I(1) + Z(10) = 22 points. Our solver displays this calculated base score next to every result.
2. Board Multipliers
During live board play, letter and word multipliers magnify your play: Double Letter (DL), Triple Letter (TL), Double Word (DW), and Triple Word (TW). Placing high-value tiles (like Q, Z, J, or X) on a TL square can easily yield 30+ points from a single tile.
3. The 50-Point "Bingo" Bonus
Playing all 7 tiles from your rack in a single turn earns a massive 50-point bonus added to your regular score. Finding 7-letter words from your rack is often the deciding factor between winning and losing competitive matches.
Strategic Scrabble Principles for Maximum Board Points
- Hunt for Parallel Hook Plays: Don't just look for long words across open space. Playing a word parallel to existing tiles forms multiple 2-letter and 3-letter words simultaneously, multiplying your turn total.
- Master 2-Letter Hooks: Memorize vital two-letter plays such as QI, ZA, JO, AX, EX, XU, and BY. They unlock congested boards and let you cash in on premium squares without exposing bonuses to your opponent.
- Rack Management (Consonant-to-Vowel Balance): Strive to keep a balanced rack of roughly 4 consonants and 3 vowels. Holding flexible tiles (like E, R, S, T, L, N) dramatically increases your probability of hitting a 50-point bingo on your next turn.
- Common Words vs. Dictionary Words: If you are playing casually with friends or family, toggle Common Words Only to avoid obscure tournament-only terms that might be contested in casual house rules.
Word List Transparency & Tournament Dictionary Limitations
Our word finder is built on the ENABLE1 (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) dataset, a foundational English reference containing 172,704 words (lengths 2–20) that powers many popular digital word games, puzzle solvers, and mobile anagram apps.
Tournament Legality Notice: Sanctioned competitive Scrabble tournaments in North America are governed by the North American SCRABBLE Players Association (NASPA) using the official NASPA Word List (NWL), while international tournaments adhere to the World English-Language Scrabble Players' Association (WESPA) Collins Official Scrabble Words (CSW). While ENABLE1 shares immense (~95%+) overlap with both official tournament lexicons on standard vocabulary, tournament committees periodically add newer modern slang, obscure geographical names, or specialized archaic inflections that are not in ENABLE1, and vice versa.
We do not make claims of official tournament adjudication legality. Serious competitive players competing in sanctioned club or tournament events should always cross-reference disputed plays against their sanctioned governing body’s official adjudication tool.

Everything you need to know about finding words and solving puzzles.
How are Scrabble point scores calculated?
Scores follow the standard English Scrabble tile values: A=1, B=3, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=4, G=2, H=4, I=1, J=8, K=5, L=1, M=3, N=1, O=1, P=3, Q=10, R=1, S=1, T=1, U=1, V=4, W=4, X=8, Y=4, Z=10. The score displayed for each word is the sum of these face values.
What is the relationship between this site’s word list and official Scrabble tournament lexicons?
Our tool is powered by the ENABLE1 (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) English word list, an authoritative public-domain vocabulary used by many popular digital word games. Official sanctioned tournament Scrabble in North America uses the NASPA Word List (NWL), and international tournaments use Collins Official Scrabble Words (CSW). While there is massive (~95%+) overlap on common and competitive words, players in sanctioned tournaments should confirm specific disputed words with official NASPA or WESPA tournament adjudication tools.
Can I search for 7-letter "bingo" words?
Yes. Keep the Word Length set to 7 letters and enter your rack tiles to discover 50-point bonus bingo plays. You can sort by "Scrabble Score: High to Low" to immediately see your highest-earning candidates.
What are 2-letter hook words and why are they so important?
Two-letter words (such as QI, ZA, JO, AX, and EX) are critical in Scrabble because they allow parallel plays, scoring points across two words simultaneously. Use the Word Length dropdown to select 2 letters to master these high-utility hooks.
