How Pattern Searching Works & Syntax Rules
Understanding positional wildcard matching, underscores, and puzzle applications
1. How Underscores (_) Work
An underscore (_) represents exactly one unknown letter at a specific position. Letters you know are typed directly into their respective slots. For example, _A__E matches words where the 2nd letter is A and the 5th letter is E.
2. Crossword Solving
When solving intersecting across/down clues where you already know certain letters (e.g. C_A__), pattern matching instantly filters thousands of potential terms down to only those that physically fit the puzzle grid.
3. Wordle & Scrabble Hooks
In Wordle, confirmed green tiles can be typed straight into the pattern boxes (e.g. S___E). In Scrabble, use patterns to evaluate board openings that connect with existing tiles or bridge toward triple letter squares.

Our pattern word finder searches the benchmark ENABLE1 (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) word list containing 172,704 English words across lengths 2 to 20.
Formatting & Legality: All pattern searches are case-insensitive. Proper nouns, capitalized trademarks, and hyphenated/apostrophe words are excluded. While ideal for casual crosswords and standard word games, competitive Scrabble tournament players should check official NASPA or WESPA adjudication tools for sanctioned event play.
