How the Wordle Solver Works
Understanding tile colors, positioning algorithms, and letter frequencies
Confirmed Positions
When a tile turns green in Wordle, that letter is confirmed in that exact spot. Our solver locks slot i to character c, instantly eliminating any word that does not have that exact letter at that index.
Misplaced Letters
A yellow tile indicates the letter is in the secret word, but not in the position you just played. Our solver applies two simultaneous checks: it requires the letter to appear at least once, while disallowing it in that specific slot.
Eliminated Letters
Gray tiles mean the letter is not in the word. If a letter is in Gray and never appeared in green or yellow, it is completely removed. If you guessed a duplicate letter (e.g. two E's) and one turned gray, our solver caps the letter count to the confirmed quantity.
Strategic Guidelines: How to Pick Your Next Guess
- Prioritize Common Everyday Words: Wordle answer lists focus primarily on everyday conversational vocabulary. Keep the Common Words Only filter active to narrow your focus to realistic solutions.
- Why Multiple Answers Often Remain: Many 5-letter English words belong to dense rhyming clusters (such as
_OUND: BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND; or_IGHT: FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT). When facing these families, single guesses can trap you in Hard Mode. - The Information Burn Guess: In regular mode, if you have 4 green letters and 5 remaining candidate consonants, guess a word that combines 3 or 4 of those consonants in a single turn (e.g. guessing BLAMP or CLAMP) to guarantee solving the puzzle on the next turn.
- Vowel Permutations: Almost every 5-letter word contains at least one core vowel (A, E, I, O, U) or Y. Identify missing vowels early to divide the candidate list in half.

How do green, yellow, and gray letter clues work in this solver?
Green letters represent confirmed letters in their exact positions (slots 1 to 5). Yellow letters represent letters known to exist in the puzzle that belong in a different position. Gray letters are letters that have been completely eliminated and cannot appear in the secret word.
How does the solver handle yellow letters in specific positions?
In our solver, you can enter yellow letters into the exact slot boxes where they turned yellow. The solver requires the letter to be present in the word, while simultaneously ruling it out from that specific position.
What happens if a letter is marked as both green and gray (duplicate letters)?
In word deduction games, if you guess a word with two identical letters (such as "OTTER") and one T is green while the other is gray, the secret word contains exactly one T. Our solver intelligently handles this: if a letter is confirmed in green or yellow and also entered into gray exclusions, words with multiple instances of that letter are eliminated while single instances are preserved.
Should I look at Common Words or All Words for Wordle?
Daily 5-letter word puzzles almost always select common, everyday English vocabulary as their solution words. We recommend keeping "Common Words Only" enabled to prioritize the most realistic answers. Switch to "All Words" if you suspect a rare or obscure dictionary word.
Why do multiple potential answers remain after several turns?
Certain 5-letter word families share identical endings with multiple rhyming consonants, such as _IGHT (FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT) or _OUND (BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND). When this occurs, consider playing an elimination word that tests several candidate consonants at once to pinpoint the exact answer.
