How the Word Unscrambler Works & Letter Frequency Rules
Understanding anagram generation, frequency constraints, and dictionary boundaries
1. Strict Letter Frequency
An unscrambler operates by matching your available letter inventory. If you enter AABC, the tool permits words with at most two A's (such as BAA or CAB). It strictly forbids words that require three A's (like ABACA) unless you entered three A characters.
2. Sub-Word & Anagram Matching
When you enter a longer letter rack (e.g. PLANET), our algorithm can find exact 6-letter full anagrams (like PLATEN) as well as valid smaller sub-words (like PLANT, LATE, TAPE, and ALE).
3. Board Placement Constraints
Combine your tile rack with open board squares using our Starts With, Ends With, and Excluded Letters filters to pinpoint exact moves on crossword, Scrabble, or Words With Friends boards.
How to Use the Word Unscrambler Effectively
- Step 1 — Enter Your Scrambled Letters: Type all available letters from your rack, jumbled anagram, or newspaper word puzzle into the letters box.
- Step 2 — Choose Target Word Length: Select "All Lengths" to see all possible words from 2 letters up to your rack size, or specify an exact length (such as 5 or 7 letters).
- Step 3 — Apply Advanced Placement Filters: If you are playing on a board with existing letters, use the optional drawer to enforce starting letters, ending letters, or exclusions.
- Step 4 — Sort by Score or Length: Sort by Scrabble Score: High to Low to immediately find your highest-scoring play, or by Word Length to find bingo candidates.
Word Database Scope & Limitations
Our word unscrambler is powered by the benchmark ENABLE1 (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) word list, containing 172,704 English words across lengths 2 to 20.
Database Limitations: The word list purposefully excludes proper nouns (e.g. London, Mary), abbreviations, words requiring apostrophes or hyphens (e.g. can't, well-known), and capitalized brand names. All characters are normalized to standard A–Z English letters.
Competitive Adjudication: While ENABLE1 shares over 95% commonality with tournament lexicons (such as NASPA NWL and Collins CSW), serious competitive players in sanctioned events should verify disputed slang or specialized tournament terms using their official governing body's adjudication tool.

Word Unscrambler FAQs
Everything you need to know about finding words and solving puzzles.
How does the Word Unscrambler work?
Enter your scrambled letters into the input box above. The unscrambler generates all valid dictionary words that can be formed using your available letters, matching each word against our current word list.
How does letter frequency work when unscrambling words?
The unscrambler strictly respects letter frequency. If you input "AABC", words can use the letter A at most twice (such as "BAA" or "CAB"). It will never form words requiring three A’s (like "ABACA") unless you enter a third A character in your input.
Can I unscramble words of specific lengths or all lengths?
Yes. You can select "All Lengths (2 to Rack Size)" to discover all anagrams and smaller sub-words, or choose an exact length (such as 5 letters or 7 letters) from the Word Length dropdown.
How do the Starts With, Ends With, and Excluded filters work?
The advanced filters let you lock in board constraints. For example, if you have a board space where a word must start with "P" and end with "T", entering those rules will narrow the unscrambled results to only valid words matching those specific positions.
What dictionary powers the unscrambler and what are its limitations?
Our tool is powered by the open-source ENABLE1 (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) English word list containing 172,704 words across lengths 2 to 20. It excludes proper nouns, hyphenated words, abbreviations, and capitalized names. While ideal for word games like Scrabble and Words With Friends, competitive tournament players should verify disputed words in their official tournament lexicon.
